Windows 8 Metro Screen

The Windows 8 "Metro" screen is the "Start menu" of the older versions of Windows. It has, going left to right, items or icon type items in categories. Arrowing, and Tabbing take you through the Metro screen items. Icons or items can be added, removed, rearranged, and grouped by function. There is an apps or "Store" icon where you can search for free and paid applications to be added to Windows 8. Some of the categories include "Business," "Entertainment," and others. Pressing the Windows key takes you from the Windows 8 Desktop to the Metro view, and tapped again takes you back to the Desktop view. On the Metro view you can type the name of a program such as "Excel" and hit the Enter key to open the Excel program. Windows 8 Metro view is directly targeted toward touch screen technology such as Windows smart phones, tablets, and some touch screen laptops. You can purchase a touch screen monitor to connect to a tower computer or non-touch screen laptop that runs Windows 8.

Shutting down Windows 8 is a little different from older versions of Windows. There are a number of ways to shut down Windows 8. One quick way to reboot or shut down Windows 8 is to hit the Windows key until you are on the Windows 8 Desktop. Then, press Alt F4 to bring up a box with a combo box of items. If you hit Enter without moving through the combo box, Windows 8 will shut down or turn off the computer. If you arrow through the combo box you will find items for restarting, locking, hibernating, and so on. Hitting Enter on one of the combo box items will do things like reboot (restart) the computer, lock the computer, or make the computer hibernate.

There is an audio demonstration (MP3 format) link for you to hit Enter on to either listen to, or to download. Move to the "BACK" link below to go to the "Simple Windows Lessons" web page.
